Seedtime

— 02/24/09
"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and and day and night, shall not cease." Genesis 8:22 KJV

Oh do I love spring and time for ordering seeds in preparing for spring's seedtime!   I was curled up under a quilt the other night and pouring over my seed catalogues.  I took full advantage of all the great 25$ coupons many of them were offering.  Buy 25$ and get 25$ worth of free stuff!  YAY!  So I placed my orders with 4 different companies allowing me to get 100$ worth of free seeds and plants!

I have on order and some seeds & plants have already started arriving.  Blueberries are here and safely in their new beds and bunching spring onion seeds are in the ground.  The rest are waiting arrival or a warm ground to be set in.

I ordered this year from Gardens Alive, Henry Fields, Gurneys and Michigan Bulb.

Coming soon or already here is:
~ Biggie Chile hot pepper seeds
~ Brandywine tomato seed (we will grow our own plants in the greenhouse)
~ Sweet Million cherry tomato seed
~ Gotta Have It Sweet Corn
~ Summer Squashes - we got a medley seed packet this year - never tried that before!
~ Turnip seed (we love the greens and the turnips too!  My children love to peel and eat them raw right from the garden!)
~Roma tomato seed
~Burgermaster tomato seed
~Rutabega seed (new one for us but we love RUTABEGAS! So we have had good success with turnips - thot we would give it a try!)
~ Kale seed ( will put this in late July for a fall crop)
~ Watermelon seeds ( we always have a huge watermelon patch and the children eat break at least 2 of them open every night during the month of August)

Then I got some grape vines - I already have a good stand of 3 year old concords...we made great jam this year from it - our first big yield.  So we are going to try some Canadice Red Seedless on a big trellis we have built behind our new housesite.

I also ordered another apple tree.  We have a 2 year old one doing very well and getting strong and tall. I wanted a 'sister' for it :)  Then I ordered 2 pear trees and a plum tree.

Had to get asparagus food as I have a nice stand of asparagus that will only be 2 years old this spring.  I got 3 spears last year :!)  Just enough for a raw snack in the garden!

Trying seed potatoes again this year.. It has been quite a while since we grew our own white potatoes.  We are going to try KENNEBECS.  We always grow a big crop of GOLDEN NUGGET sweet potatoes.

Oh and I am getting some VIDALIA onion sets.  Mrs P. (age 82) at church tells me they only grow great in Georgia as they have the perfect soil for it.  So what is the perfect soil for a VIDALIA? Dunno...I guess I'll throw on lots of our rabbit compost!

And Roger will put in okra and cukes..we have seeds saved from last year.  So now on to the TOP 10 REASONS TO GARDEN!

1 - Good return on your investment!
2 - Free aroma therapy!
3 - Pick your own lunch!
4 - Cheaper "day out" than a "spa day"
5 - No effort tanning!
6 - Grow your own weeds!
7 - view God's beautiful creation for free!
8 - Hoeing is a free workout!
9 - Dirt digging is good therapy!
10 - Listening to the birds - God's symphony!

My list was just the edible part.  I have to add some new flowers every year too!  I have a new flower bed where I am loading it with farmhouse flower mix for summer cutting bouquets. And early this past fall I put in 2 new large beds behind my new stone retainer walls - hydrangeas, lilies, hostas and crawling vinca along with some astillble and geraniums.

Oh and I forgot to say - I am so excited to put in an ENGLISH WALNUT tree this year.  I hope it makes it!  We have 4 PECANS - they are still babies transplanted from Grandpa's pecan grove.  But with tender care and lots of rabbit compost I hope they grow to be tall giants!
