Family Table Courtesies

After my children learned these well by number, not always in practice, mind you, but by memory -- they would call out the number of the rule being violated at the table or when getting up to leave the table call out to me "Hey, Momma, # 10!"
1. Sit properly at the table, sitting up straight with your feet and legs under the table. 2. Sit quietly and politely until the food is served or you are told to prepare your plate. 3. Place the napkin that is by your plate in your lap; use it to wipe your mouth and hands. 4. Do not reach over others to get food. Ask politely and someone nearby will pass it to you. 5. Happily eat the food that has been prepared and do not ask for other foods not on the table. 6. Chew with your mouth closed and do not talk while your mouth is full of food. 7. Mealtime conversations need to be appropriate table talk. 8. Do not take the last portion of food, until offering it first to the others at the table. 9. Wait for all to finish their meal before asking about desserts. 10. Remember to thank the cook for the good meal. 11. Do not leave the table until you have been excused by the hostess or host. 12. Offer to help clean up the table after the meal, if you are able. COPYRIGHT MarmeeDear & Co, LLC 2005 |
